Nizar Merali - Non-Executive Joint Chair
How long have you been working for Harmoni?
I am one of the founding GPs who established Harmoni in 1996.
Background...
I was born in Mombassa, Kenya, and attended the University of Manchester from 1971 to 1976, graduating with MBChB (Hons). After a surgical house job at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, I moved south to take post at Watford General Hospital as a House physician, and from there onto Northwick Park Hospital as a rotating senior house officer. In 1982 I became a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and started to accelerate an interest in the care of the elderly. This interest led to the award of a Diploma in Geriatric Medicine (1986). In 1996 I established the North Harrow Nursery, a day care facility in Harrow created under the community interest company model. I am a trustee of several UK registered Charities.
A little-know fact about you...
My ancestors established a coffee trading company in Kenya. By the mid 20th century the company had become one of the most prominent coffee exporters in Africa and the business today is known as Merali Dewji & Sons (Kenya) Ltd.
